History lesson
Ready for a little history lesson?
Beer Pong has now conquered Germany, and hardly a shared apartment party takes place without this fun drinking game. But how did Beer Pong actually come about and who invented it? Today we'll dig a little deeper into the matter. Let's take a look at the timeline of Beer Pong and see how it became the party game we all love. If you're still looking for the right equipment, check out our Beer Pong tables .
The party guests watching the game placed their beer cups on the ping-pong table. When a player accidentally hit the ball into one of the cups, the idea of the game supposedly originated. Kind of funny, right? The first photos of beer pong games, however, date back to a college yearbook from 1968.
Beer Pong was originally intended to be played with table tennis paddles, with only one beer bottle on each side of the table, and the goal being to hit the opposite bottle. However, the grandiose name "Beer Pong" was already in use back then.
Where does the name “Beirut” come from?
In the 1980s, the game became more popular in the US and spread throughout the country. This was partly because the development of plastic cups made the game easier, but there was also another reason that might sound a bit strange.
The conflict between the US and Lebanon was in full swing. Therefore, throwing the balls into the cups was meant to represent the American bombing of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Seriously, America?!
However, this is a story that is not based on any facts, so a connection between the game and the Lebanon conflict cannot be proven with certainty.
Beer Pong as a sport
Naturally, beer pong also gained popularity outside of the United States. By 2013, beer pong was already a globally recognized fun and competitive sport, with a World Series featuring $50,000 in prize money.
For years now, many tournaments have been taking place in bars and universities, as well as at events and private gatherings. In 2017, Beer Pong was actually combined with the Olympic sport of golf.
Beer Pong Golf...a dream, right?
